Date Ideas Los Angeles from a Matchmaker

Looking for date ideas Los Angeles? I’ve been working on curating the top date ideas in each major US city, and luckily, one of LUMA’s resident Matchmakers is an LA native! When I interviewed her for this article, I was taken aback by the nearly endless opportunities for creative, unforgettable date ideas in the city of angels.

As a professional Matchmaker with over 25 years of experience, I know firsthand the power of curating perfect dates that foster deeper relationships. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back day date or an extravagant night out in Hollywood, LA has some truly amazing venues for all couples!

We have something for everyone on this list, from planning a first date with your new flame or celebrating an anniversary. From breathtaking sunset views to hidden gem restaurants, these thoughtfully crafted date ideas Los Angeles will help you create lasting memories.

Griffith Observatory

An iconic LA feature, the Griffith Park & Observatory is one of the best spots in the whole city for breathtaking sunset views. Entrance to the observatory is completely free and makes for a great addition to a dinner or movie date. With so much to offer, including multiple gardens and hiking trails, The Griffith Observatory is an ideal daytime date too!

The Griffith Observatory is one of the best ideas on my list for less-established couples and first dates. Unlike more traditional date ideas in Los Angeles, this observatory offers something for just about everyone in a comfortable, scenic environment.

Echo Park Swan Boats

Echo Park alone has so much to offer for romantic dates, from short, casual trails to serene natural gardens. However, what makes Echo Park such a stand-out idea for dates is its Swan Boat Rentals! Paddling around the scenic lake with your love is quintessential romance. Bring a picnic to extend your evening and enjoy all the park has to offer.

The Swan Boats at Echo Park are the perfect romantic date for just about any couple. Paddle boating is a fun, easygoing activity perfect for striking conversation among beautiful lake views. This is the ideal spot for a laid-back date

Malibu Riders Horseback Rides

I grew up riding horses, so I might be biased, but this is my personal favorite date idea in Los Angeles. Enjoy stunning natural landscapes and a unique, romantic adventure with Malibu Riders. Their horseback riding guides offer tours in Zuma Canyon and Malibu Creek State Park, however, their most romantic tour is their hour-long excursion through Paramount Ranch.

Because this excursion requires planning and preparation and is one of the more expensive dates on my list, this idea is best for couples celebrating an anniversary or other occasion.

Runyon Canyon Hike

If you and your partner are into fitness and nature, this is arguably one of the best date hikes in the LA area. The Runyon Canyon Park Hike features absolutely stunning views of LA and is expansive enough to find ample space away from the crowds. However, I don’t recommend the hike for beginners as it can be moderately challenging.

As a Matchmaker, I’ll be planning this as a date for my outdoorsy, nature-loving couples. Typically, I steer my newer couples away from hiking dates as they can be a bit too intense. However, Runyon Canyon is so scenic that it’s an exception. You and your love can enjoy a spectacular sunset and great conversation along the hike.

The Last Bookstore

This quirky, airy book and record store is the perfect addition to a carefree, casual date. It’s located inside of an old, historic bank, and learning its lore and history is a fun way to connect with your date. With multiple floors to explore, all filled with mind-bending displays and gorgeous architecture, The Last Bookstore has a nostalgic charm and romantic allure.

Browsing old books and beautiful architecture is such a great idea for a first date. The laid-back, inviting atmosphere is sure to encourage meaningful conversation, and with so much to explore, this is a great spot to meet up as a prequel to your evening date.

Musso & Frank Grill

Step back in time to Old Hollywood at Musso & Frank Grill. Known for their craft martinis, this nostalgic, timeless steakhouse is essential for all film lovers. The oldest restaurant in Hollywood features real wooden booths, dim, romantic lighting, and plenty of history.

With its undeniable old-school charm and warm, swanky atmosphere, this restaurant is sure to keep the conversation flowing and create lasting memories for any couple, no matter how long they’ve been together.

Picnic at Venice Beach

Bring a charcuterie board, some hors d’oeuvres, and red wine for a relaxing picnic at one of LA’s most iconic beaches. However, if packing picnics isn’t really your thing, you can arrange for a signature, luxury outdoor picnic with The Picnic Collective!

Can a date be more picturesque than wining and dining at the beach? Whether you bring your own or use a catering service, enjoying a delicious meal while watching the waves roll into Venice Beach is one of the most romantic date ideas on my list. With so much to do nearby, your date doesn’t have to end after your meal!

DLTA At 71Above

Experience a luxury dining experience and catch stunning views of LA’s scenic landscape at this chic rooftop bar. Located in the U.S. Bank Tower, this restaurant makes for an unforgettable evening of elevated cuisine and spectacular scenery. With panoramic views of the city, 71Above is one of the most romantic dates on my list.

I suggest this restaurant for established couples celebrating an anniversary or other accomplishment, as this is one of the more expensive date ideas I’ve listed. Their dining options are reservation only, it’s strongly advised to plan ahead to ensure you have the best experience.

El Matador Beach

For breathtaking views of the sunset and plenty of space to step away from crowds, look no further than El Matador Beach. This hidden gem beach in Malibu is less prone to overcrowding, which allows couples to appreciate its rocky outcrops and stunning scenery with privacy. El Matador Beach is arguably one of the most serene beaches in LA, and features coves to explore as well. Keep in mind that a short hike is required for beach access, so dress accordingly!

There are so many other beaches I could list, but my LUMA matchmaker has assured me that El Matador is one of the best in LA. Its casual, yet intimate vibe offers more seclusion than most beaches in the area, making this a great place for some rest, relaxation, and romance.

The Huntington Library & Gardens

Featuring breathtaking botanical gardens and art galleries, The Huntington Library & Gardens is the perfect location for an adventurous, scenic, and sophisticated date. With over 200+ acres to explore and gardens featuring both native and exotic plants, this is the perfect idea for a more manicured nature date. This library also features a few small galleries on site.

This library has something for almost everyone, making it a great place for first dates. With so much to do and see at the Huntington Library, you’re sure to inspire meaningful conversation and have a charming evening with your partner.

Korean Bell of Friendship

Located in San Pedro, this stunning location provides gorgeous ocean views and nostalgic charm. This is another great date spot to see the sunset. The rich history behind this monument is sure to encourage meaningful, insightful conversation, and the ocean backdrop creates a romantic, serene atmosphere.

Couples at any stage in their relationship will love a visit to this landmark. With beautiful scenery and deep cultural significance, the Korean Bell of Friendship is a great meet-up location for your date night.

The Bradbury Building

This architectural wonder in LA is a show-stopping date location. As the oldest commercial building downtown, it embodies a timeless, sophisticated, yet easygoing atmosphere. You can plan to spend time strolling around the courtyard or admiring its beautiful design.

The Bradbury Building is the perfect addition to any couple’s lunch or afternoon date. Its inviting, chic charm really sets the tone for deep conversation and romance, all while being extremely accessible with its central location.

Velaslavasay Panorama

Featuring an exhibition hall, theater, and gardens, Velaslavasay Panorama is the perfect location for an unforgettable date. This museum houses the only painted, 360-degree panorama in the US, and offers many other entirely unique pieces and collections. This museum offers seasonal plays and galleries, as well as year-round installations.

With its cultured, swanky charm, the Velaslavasay Panorama is a great place to meet up and explore before a long night out on the town. The ambiance sets the mood for introspection and conversation while also keeping things lighthearted and fun!

Descanso Gardens

Another of LA’s remarkable botanical gardens, Descanso Gardens‘ lush acres provide a serene setting for nature-loving couples. With features like manicured, yet natural walking paths and lush, opulent flower gardens, this date spot provides a peaceful, beautiful backdrop for any day date.

The Descanso Gardens are another great idea for nature-loving couples! With a small admission fee and so much to offer, these botanical gardens are perfect for encouraging insightful conversation and connection.

Hollywood Sign Hike

Leading to one of the most iconic views in all of Los Angeles, the Hollywood Sign Hike is a timeless staple for first dates. As one of the least strenuous hikes on this list, just about every couple can make the journey to this national landmark. Along the hike, you can also catch spectacular views of LA’s rolling hills.

Because the Hollywood Sign is so iconic, nearly everyone will be able to strike up a conversation about its history, making this a stellar spot for a first date. With such beautiful views, it’s sure to be the perfect backdrop for a romantic hiking date.
