Best Date Ideas NYC from a Matchmaker
Best Date Ideas NYC From a Matchmaker
Looking for the best date ideas NYC? The Big Apple offers an incredible variety of events, shows, and venues, which can make planning the perfect date feel overwhelming. With almost endless options, where do you start?
A few months ago, I visited NYC to catch up with an old friend. As a matchmaker, I’m always on the lookout for the most romantic and unique date ideas for my clients and their matches. My friend and I spent plenty of time exploring the city, and I took notes on some of the best spots for an unforgettable date.
Having spent a lot of time working with clients in the NYC metro area, I’ve seen firsthand how the right setting can spark connections and deepen bonds. Whether you’re drawn to iconic landmarks or hidden gems, or prefer a sophisticated dinner or a rooftop yoga session, these handpicked date ideas NYC are sure to create lasting memories for you and your partner.
Try a Rooftop Yoga Class
If you and your love need some relaxation and zen, taking a rooftop yoga class might just be the perfect date for you on my list. Located in the iconic Hudson Yards, couples can experience serenity and breathtaking views 100 stories up at The Edge x Equinox at one of their sky-high yoga classes!
This date idea is great for fitness-loving couples looking to try a new experience while strengthening their connection. However, keep in mind that this may not be the best idea for anyone afraid of heights!
Take a Greenwich Village Ghost Tour
Really, does anything bring couples closer than eerie ghost tours? You and your partner can explore the scary side of The Big Apple with guided ghost tours throughout Greenwich Village, and I recommend booking with Boroughs of the Dead. Most tours will take you through haunted buildings and reveal dark, hidden secrets about their past.
I love suggesting spooky adventures for my LUMA clients because it’s such a thrilling, out-of-the-box date idea for new couples still getting to know each other.
Plan a Day Trip to Coney Island
Can you think of a more Instagram-worthy date than a day trip to Coney Island? This amusement park is brimming with nostalgia, charm, and so much character. With more rides, games, and beachside attractions than you can plan to do in one day, you and your love can plan to visit Coney Island once a year for your anniversary!
If I could, I would visit Coney Island just about every month. Seriously, there’s so much to explore, and the carefree, lighthearted environment is perfect for any couple seeking a fun-filled, yet romantic weekend trip.
Visit an Escape Room
I’ve heard it argued that escape rooms are a dying trend, but the sheer amount of them in NYC proves any critic wrong! If you and your partner are looking for a challenge, visiting one of NYC’s many escape rooms could be just what you’re looking for. I do recommend checking out Escape the Room, as it’s one of the top-rated escape rooms in the city.
As a Matchmaker, I usually suggest dates for my clients where they will have tons of fun, but also deeply connect with each other. Escape rooms are such an underrated first date because they force couples to work together to solve the puzzle, which helps to create lasting connections.
Dine at Le Coucou
This is the perfect date idea for couples seeking a refined, upscale, and romantic culinary experience. Le Coucou serves elevated French fare in a warm, posh atmosphere. The elegant backdrop and classic French cuisine are the perfect setting for an intimate night out with your love.
Le Coucou is one of the best places on my list to celebrate an anniversary or other special occasion with your partner. Please keep in mind that this restaurant is considered a fine dining experience, and you’ll need to make a reservation well in advance.
Take a Romantic Helicopter Tour
There’s something so magical about viewing a city from a new perspective. With HeliNY, you can soar over NYC’s breathtaking skyline with one of their helicopter tours. They offer services with stunning views of landmarks like The Statue of Liberty and Central Park, so no matter which borough of NYC has your heart, you’ll be able to enjoy it from a new point of view.
There are few better places to propose than before or after a romantic helicopter tour! However, if you’re planning to pop the question during your tour, I highly recommend you schedule your flight well in advance to ensure everything goes off without a hitch.
Plan a Night Out at the Brooklyn Bowl
I so regret I wasn’t able to visit this location on the weekend, but I did pop in to check out the ambiance during my NYC trip. At this vibrant Williamsburg venue, you can enjoy elevated bowling, genre-defying live music, and a wonderful meal. This bowling alley and music venue is the perfect setting for a fun and energetic date night.
Brooklyn Bowl is a great venue for music-loving couples to spend a night out on the town. However, it’s worth noting that it can get a little crowded on the weekends, so be prepared to get up close and personal with strangers or plan your visit during the weekday.
Row Boat at Central Park
Having been featured in so many rom-coms, row boating in Central Park is a quintessential New Yorker date. Taking your love on a gentle boat ride through one of NYC’s most iconic locations is the perfect date for couples looking to slow down, enjoy the moment, and rekindle the spark in their relationship.
With virtually no other distractions, taking a boat ride through Central Park is a wonderful way to reconnect with your partner over insightful conversation. You’ll have plenty of time and space to enjoy your company while meandering through the beautiful scenery.
Visit the Museum of Ice Cream
With its picture-perfect pink backdrops and over 14 different exhibits to explore, the Museum of Ice Cream is a great date idea for couples wanting to have a bit of playful fun! The lighthearted, whimsical installations are interactive, and the joyful, upbeat ambiance is sure to encourage plenty of conversation and connection.
The Museum of Ice Cream is my favorite NYC date idea for double dates! If you’re looking to bring another couple out on your date night, this venue is a great place to learn, explore, and most importantly, have tons of fun.
Have a Laugh at Drunk Shakespeare
Is it true that women always go for the funny guys? If that’s the case, taking your date to Drunk Shakespeare is a great way to win her heart. You and your love can watch a truly comical performance where actors attempt to perform classic lines after imbibing.
As a Matchmaker, I know the importance of being silly and laughing together at the beginning of a relationship. I think this is one of the best spots on my list for first dates. The low-pressure, yet lively environment will definitely make your date chuckle and help you form a lasting connection.
Board Games at The Uncommons
Whether you’re looking for friendly competition with your partner or to challenge another couple to a game, The Uncommons provides the perfect setting for fun, play, and rivalry! Featuring both cooperative and competitive board games, you’ll have plenty of gaming options to choose from.
This is another great venue for double dates, as many games at The Uncommons are designed for four players. However, there are plenty of 2-player games too, so you and your love can enjoy a lone date night as well.
Watch the Sunset at Little Bay Bridge Pier
I think watching a sunset with your partner is a right of passage in just about every relationship. If you haven’t had that experience yet, you can enjoy a peaceful, scenic view of the setting sky from Little Bay Bridge Pier. There’s plenty of space to spread out and separate from the crowd, so you and your love can tuck away in a more private area along the pier.
If you’ve been feeling disconnected from your partner lately, try inviting them to Little Bay Bridge Pier for some necessary conversation, introspection, and reality. The calming vibe of the sunset provides the perfect opportunity for couples to talk about their hopes, dreams, and desires.
Poetry Reading at a Local Cafe
Poems are arguably the most romantic form of literature, and NYC is one of the most bustling hubs for poetry in the US! My top poetry cafe recommendation is Nuyorican, as they have a show for just about everyone. Just remember to visit their website and check out their upcoming shows to decide which reading you and your partner want to see!
Poetry reading is often emotional, touching, and thoughtful, all of which help to encourage bonding and connection. This is such a unique, intimate date idea for intellectual couples interested in profound writing, thoughts, and perspectives.
Go Out for Jazz Night at a Club
There’s something to be said about the timeless, swanky vibe that jazz music creates. It’s arguably the most romantic genre of music. Luckily, NYC is home to some of the best jazz clubs in the nation, and BirdLand Jazz is a stand-out club even with such tense competition.
This is my favorite date idea on the list for more established couples looking to reconnect over new experiences. Jazz is known for its improvisational and emotional depth, and the energy of a jazz club will certainly encourage your partner to ask you to dance!
Dine at One if By Land, Two if By Sea
This is undoubtedly the most romantic dinner date on my list. It’s literally known as one of the most romantic restaurants in the world! Even the name is deeply poetic. With dim, candle-light tables and charming historical beauty, One If By Land, Two If By Sea is an exceptional venue for a proposal or anniversary celebration.
The upscale, intimate, and sophisticated atmosphere of this restaurant is second to none in NYC. However, reservations are required well in advance, and you can expect to be put on a waitlist!
