Valentine’s Day can be tricky for both men and women, especially if you just started dating someone. As a Matchmaker, I get asked all the time, “what should I do if I just started dating someone?”
There are all sorts of do’s and don’ts people should take into consideration when deciding whether to go on a Valentine’s Day date with their new partner. Here are some of them.
VALENTINE’S DAY DATING ADVICE: THE DO’S AND DON’TS
New Year’s Rule of Thumb
Generally, as a rule of thumb, I always say that if you were not dating on New Years, then you don’t need to worry about being together for Valentine’s. That’s a pretty short period of time to be dating. Now, this leads to my next point though.
Determine the Type of Relationship
It really depends on the type of relationship you have. Is it pretty hot and heavy where you’re talking and texting almost every day and the relationship is progressing rapidly or is it one where you’re just dating and see each other maybe once a week and send a text here or there? The type of relationship you have will determine if you should expect to get together and have a date on Valentine’s Day for how to become relationship ready)
What Would You Do If It Wasn’t Valentine’s Day?
Ask yourself what would you do if it was any other Friday. Would you plan on getting together for a date anyway or are you not so sure? If you’re not sure, then I would spend Valentine’s with your other single friends or take a night to spoil yourself – get a massage and make plans with them on another night.
Don’t Go Over the Top Buying an Expensive or Elaborate Gift
This is not the time to show the person you’re dating just how generous you are because it may come off as a bit too much. I’m sure they’ll appreciate it but imagine the embarrassment you’re both going to feel when they hand you a simple box of chocolates or a rose after you’ve given them a nice watch. Talk About It
Crazy concept, I know! If you’re not sure what to do, then I highly suggest you talk about it with your significant other. Simply ask them, “So what does Valentines mean to you? Are you the kind of person that likes to go all out or do you look at it like it’s just a Hallmark holiday and a way for Marketers to sell stuff?” By being direct you can expect to get a better handle of their expectations and take the guesswork out of it.
